The Catalyst
POV: Jean Grey
Jean couldn't sleep.
She lay on the pull-out couch, staring at the ceiling, listening to the city breathe. The apartment was quiet, Peter had gone to bed hours ago, and she could feel him through the link. His dreams were restless, fragmented, full of shadows.
She closed her eyes and reached out.
Not to invade. Just to feel. To understand.
Peter's mind was a storm, images flickered like lightning... MJ's face, Ned's laugh, May's grave. And underneath it all, a current of loneliness so deep it made Jean's chest ache.
He's been alone for so long.
She pulled back. She didn't want to intrude but the damage was done, she'd seen enough.
She'd seen the way Peter thought about MJ. The way his heart clenched every time he saw her. The way he replayed their conversation at Frank's hideout, over and over, like a wound he couldn't stop touching.
"I don't love you..."
Jean had felt those words hit Peter like bullets. She'd felt him accept them. She'd felt him decide that he deserved them.
He thinks he deserves to be alone.
The thought made her angry, not at MJ, at him. At the way he carried guilt like a religion, like suffering was the only way to atone for being alive.
You don't deserve this, she thought. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be loved.
She sat up, the city lights cast strange shadows on the walls.
She thought about MJ, about the way MJ had looked at Peter in the park. About the jealousy she'd felt through the link... sharp and painful and real.
She loves him. Even if she doesn't remember. Even if she doesn't know.
Jean closed her eyes.
She loves him.
And then, quieter:
And he loves her.
She'd known this from the beginning, she'd seen it in his mind... the way MJ occupied a space in his heart that no one else could fill, she'd accepted it, she'd told herself she could live with it.
But now, sitting in the dark, she realized something.
He'll never be happy without her.
The thought was a knife.
He'll never be whole. He'll never stop grieving. He'll never stop waiting for something that might never come.
Jean pressed her hands to her face.
I can't fix him. I can't replace her. I can't be enough.
She wanted to scream, wanted to cry, wanted to crawl into Peter's room and hold him and never let go.
But she couldn't.
Because she loved him too much.
The Decision
It came to her at dawn.
She was watching the sun rise over the city, orange and pink and gold, spilling over the skyline like paint. It was beautiful. It was hopeful.
And Jean realized, she had a choice.
She could keep Peter to herself. She could let him stay broken, stay lonely, stay hers. She could be the one who healed him, the one who held him together, the one who loved him enough to make him forget.
Or she could give him back.
She could give him back to MJ, give him back to Ned... she could give him back to the life he'd lost, the life he deserved.
The thought terrified her.
If I do this, I'll lose him.
She knew that, she knew it with a certainty that made her stomach churn.
If MJ remembers, if she feels what Peter feels, she'll choose him, and he'll choose her, and I'll be...
Alone.
The word hung in her mind like a verdict.
Alone.
She'd been alone before, she'd survived it, she could survive it again.
But it would hurt, it would hurt more than anything she'd ever experienced. More than Sara's death, more than the DODC, more than every nightmare she'd ever had.
Because Peter was the first person who'd ever made her feel... whole. The first person who'd looked at her and seen something worth saving! The first person who'd said "You have me" and meant it.
And she was about to give him away.
She closed her eyes.
But he deserves to be happy.
And that was the thing, wasn't it? That was the truth she couldn't escape.
He deserves to be happy. Even if it's not with me.
She opened her eyes.
She stood up.
She had made a decision.
POV: Peter Parker
Peter woke up to an empty apartment.
Jean was gone.
He checked his phone, no messages. He checked the fire escape, nothing. He checked the link, and felt... something. A faint presence, distant, like she was blocking him out.
He didn't know what to feel.
He made coffee, stared at the wall and tried not to think about MJ. He failed.
At 10 AM, he was supposed to meet her at Morning Glory. He still didn't know what to say.
He showered, got dressed and headed for the door.
And then he felt it, a surge of emotion through the link. Jean. She was... determined. And underneath it, something else. Something that felt like grief.
Jean?
No response.
Jean, what's going on?
Silence.
He stopped, closed his eyes and reached out through the link, not to invade, just to feel.
And he felt it.
Love.
Overwhelming. Unconditional. Sacrificial.
She's going to do something.
He didn't know what, but he knew it was big. He knew it was going to change everything.
He ran out the door.
POV: Jean Grey
She found only Ned at his apartment, MJ had left already.
He was at his apartment, working on his app, headphones in. He jumped when she knocked.
"Jean? What are you..."
"I need to talk to you."
She walked past him into the apartment. Ned closed the door, looking confused.
"What's going on? Is Peter okay?"
"He's fine. He's... he's about to meet MJ in a while."
"Oh." Ned's expression shifted. "That's... good? I think?"
"I need your help."
Ned frowned. "With what?"
Jean took a breath.
"I can show you the memories."
Ned stared at her. "What?"
"I'm a telepath. I can share memories. Peter's memories, of you, of MJ, of... everything."
Ned was quiet.
"I've been inside his mind. I've seen what he lost. I've seen what all of you lost."
"Why are you telling me this?"
Jean looked at him. "Because he'll never tell you himself, because he's so determined to protect everyone that he forgot to let anyone protect him. Because you deserve to know who he is, who you are to him."
Ned's voice was barely a whisper. "Why are you doing this?"
"Because I love him and he loves MJ. And I can't... I can't keep being the only person who knows."
Ned was quiet for a long time.
Then: "You're really something, Jean."
"I'm really something."
He sat down on the couch. He looked up at her.
"Do it."
POV: Ned Leeds
Jean took his hand.
Their foreheads touched.
And then...
He's fourteen. He's doing a handshake with Peter in the school hallway. He's laughing. He's happy.
They are in Peter's apartment. They're playing video games. Peter is terrible at Mario Kart. Ned is winning.
They's at Liz's party. MJ is there. They're talking. They're becoming friends.
They're building something. Peter is explaining something complicated. Ned doesn't understand. But he loves it.
Peter's at a funeral. May's funeral. He is standing alone. He doesn't cry.
He's here. Now. Jean is showing him everything.
And he understands.
Ned pulled back.
He was crying.
"He's my best friend."
Jean nodded.
"He's been my best friend this whole time, and I didn't..."
"You did, you just didn't remember."
Ned wiped his eyes. "Why are you doing this? Seriously, I know you love Peter, and if you show it to MJ ...."
Jean looked at him. "Because I'm not selfish enough."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
Ned was quiet.
Then: "He loves MJ."
"I know."
"And MJ loves him, even if she doesn't remember."
"I know."
"So you're..."
"I'm giving him back."
Ned stared at her.
"You're giving him back."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Jean's voice cracked. "Because he deserves to be happy and I can't... I can't be enough for him. I can't give him what she can."
Ned stood up. He walked over to her. He put his hand on her shoulder.
"You're wrong."
Jean looked at him.
"You're enough. You will always been enough. Peter just... he just doesn't know it yet."
Jean's eyes were wet. "He loves her."
"He does but he cares about you too. I've seen it. I've felt it."
Jean shook her head. "It's not the same."
"Maybe not but it's something. And maybe... maybe he can love both of you."
Jean laughed. It was hollow. "That's not how it works."
"Maybe it should be."
She didn't answer.
Ned squeezed her shoulder.
"Thank you," he said. "For showing me, for giving me back my best friend."
Jean nodded.
She stood up.
"I have to go."
"Where?"
"To find MJ, before she meets Peter, before..."
She didn't finish.
Ned understood.
"Good luck."
Jean left.
POV: Jean Grey
She found MJ at Morning Glory.
She was there way too early thankfully and was sitting at a table by the window, staring at her coffee. She looked nervous. She looked hopeful.
Jean walked in. The bell chimed.
MJ looked up, her expression shifted, confusion, then recognition.
"You're... Jean."
"Yeah."
"You're the girl who was with Peter, in the park."
"Yeah."
MJ's voice was careful. "What do you want?"
Jean sat down across from her.
"I need to show you something."
POV: MJ
MJ didn't understand.
She didn't understand why Jean was here. She didn't understand why her heart was racing. She didn't understand why she felt like something was about to change.
"What do you want to show me?"
Jean took a breath.
"Peter's memories. Of you. Of... everything."
MJ's mouth went dry. "What?"
"I'm a telepath. I can share memories. I've been inside his mind. I've seen what he lost."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because you deserve to know. Because he'll never tell you himself, because you're about to make a decision, and you deserve to make it with all the information."
MJ stared at her.
"I don't understand."
Jean leaned forward. "You told him you didn't love him, you told him it was too late. But you feel something, don't you? Something you can't explain?"
MJ's voice was barely a whisper. "Yes."
"That's because some part of you remembers. Some part of your soul knows, even if your mind has forgotten."
She extended her hand.
"Let me show you."
MJ hesitated.
Then she took Jean's hand.
The Memories
She's laughing. A boy is tripping over his own feet. He's nervous. He's adorable. He says something dumb. She laughs harder.
Peter and Ned are staring at Liz and she chimes in with a hint that she wants to be their friend.
She tells him that she figured out that he's Spider-Man when he was expecting her to confess her love.
She's on a rooftop. The city is below. The boy is Spider-Man. She's MJ. She's wearing a black dahlia necklace, the broken one she still has. He says, "I love you." She says, "I love you too."
And then, Jean. Peter's voice: "You have me." Jean's face, broken, desperate, hopeful.
Peter, laughing with Ned. Genuine laughter. His eyes are bright. He looks... happy.
Peter, with Jean, on the fire escape. "We're both pretty messed up, huh?" "At least we're messed up together."
Peter, looking at a photo of MJ on his phone. He doesn't smile. He doesn't cry. He just... looks.
Peter, alone, in his apartment. Silence. The weight of everything.
She opens her eyes.
POV: MJ
She was crying.
She didn't realize it until she felt the tears on her cheeks.
She looked at Jean. Jean was crying too.
"He loved me," MJ whispered.
"Yes."
"He still loves me."
"Yes."
MJ's voice cracked. "I told him I didn't love him. I told him it was too late."
Jean nodded.
"I didn't mean it. I was angry. I was..."
"I know."
MJ wiped her eyes. "Why did you show me this?"
Jean looked at her. "Because he deserves to be happy, and I can't... I can't be enough for him."
MJ stared at her. "You love him."
"Yes."
"And you're..."
"I'm giving him back."
MJ was quiet.
"That's not fair to you."
"I know."
"You'll be alone."
"I know."
MJ reached across the table. She took Jean's hand.
"Thank you."
Jean's voice cracked. "I don't want your thanks. I want..."
She stopped.
"You want him."
"Yes."
MJ was quiet. Then: "I don't know if I can... if I can be what he needs. I don't remember. I don't have the memories. I only have... feelings."
Jean squeezed her hand. "That's enough. Feelings are enough."
"What about you?"
Jean smiled. It was sad. "I'll figure it out."
She stood up.
"Go to him. He's waiting."
She walked away.
POV: Peter Parker
Peter was at Morning Glory.
He was sitting at a table by the window, staring at his coffee. He didn't know what he was going to say to MJ. He didn't know what she wanted.
Then the bell chimed.
He looked up.
MJ was standing in the doorway.
Her eyes were red. She'd been crying.
"MJ?"
She walked over. She sat down across from him.
"I saw her," she said. "Jean, she showed me... everything."
Peter's heart stopped.
"She showed me the memories. Your memories of me, of... us."
Peter's voice was barely a whisper. "MJ..."
"I felt it. Everything you felt. Everything you feel."
She reached across the table. She took his hand.
"I don't remember. I don't have the memories. But I feel it and I'm sorry... I'm sorry I told you I didn't love you. I'm sorry I said it was too late."
Peter's eyes were wet. "You had every right to be angry."
"I know but I was wrong. I was wrong about not loving you."
Peter stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
MJ took a breath.
"I'm saying... I want to try. I want to find out what we were. What we could be."
Peter's voice cracked. "MJ..."
"I'm not asking for a promise. I'm not asking for forever. I'm just asking for a chance."
Peter looked at her hand then at her face.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay?"
"Okay."
She smiled.
It was the first real smile he'd seen from her in four years.
POV: Jean Grey
Jean was on the rooftop across from Morning Glory.
She watched Peter and MJ through the window. She watched them hold hands, watched them cry, watched them hope.
She felt Peter's happiness through the link. Bright. Warm. Real.
She closed her eyes.
This is what I wanted.
She told herself that. She repeated it like a mantra.
This is what I wanted.
But it didn't make it hurt less.
She turned away.
She walked home.
Alone.
